The 5th Interdisciplinary Pain Symposium is being held this week in Cork. This years meeting, entitled the “Gut-Pain Axis” is focused on the exploring the close relationship between chronic pain and gastrointestinal function.
Dr. Hegarty (Consultant in Pain Management & Clinical Director Pain Relief Ireland) is again the Faculty Chair and has teamed up with Mr. Emmet Andrew (Consultant Surgeon, Cork University Hospital) to draw attention to the importance of understand the interactive nature pain generated from the gut.
“The Focus of the meeting is to highlight ways of diagnosing, investigating, preventing and managing the impact in this group of patients. By having a combined surgical and pain specialist educational evening this will allow for a greater understanding between the professional disciplines and ultimately offer the best options of care for the individuals effected by this type of pain” says Dr. Hegarty.
The meeting will be attended by surgical, anesthetics, pain and pharmacology all based in the University Hospitals in the region. “We are ensuring that our trainee doctors are given the best opportunity in Cork to expand their knowledge and become better clinicians in the years ahead.
Industry and the respective training colleges support the meeting. It is not open to the public to attend.
