Suffering from arm pain, neck pain or headaches that are not responding to physiotherapy or over the counter analgesics? Your neck could be the source of the issue.
Dr. Dominic Hegarty, Consultant in Pain Management and Clinical director at Pain Relief Ireland discusses the options available to help you diagnose and treat this condition with Maura & Daithi on RTE’s Today program.
Chronic neck pain is common and costly, effecting 30% of individuals on a regular basis. Dr. Hegarty believes that “this pain can impact on the individual’s daily function, their quality of life and it can quickly isolate them from colleagues, family and friends”. Early intervention is one of the most important steps an individual can take in order to avoid the long-term consequences.
“...this pain can impact on the individual’s daily function, their quality of life and it can quickly isolate them from colleagues, family and friends”.
Neck pain, including arm and pain into the back of the head can be caused by direct injury from reaching upwards, involvement in a road traffic accident, sports injury or from repetitive injury due to poor posture.
If neck or arm pain is not eliminated within 6 weeks of onset, then individuals should look into matters further and seek a pain review. This can avoid extensive neck surgery in months to come. Dr. Hegarty believes that identification of the cause of the injury, early physiotherapy and simple interventional pain procedures can help individuals avoid long and costly exposure to pain.
Dr. Hegarty will discuss the pain interventional options that are available to treat this painful condition including denervation and lysis. Dr. Hegarty is an expert in the Cervical Razc Epidualysis technique and he teaches the technique at international workshops and symposium. He uses this regularly to identify the cause and treat painful regions in the neck when other approaches have failed. These techniques can provide over 50% improvement in pain for a prolonged period of time.
Facet Syndrome, one of the most common causes of back pain, is a condition that effects the articular surface of joint either side vertebra and the inferior articular process of the vertebra above it. In facet syndrome the cartilage on these joint surfaces has deteriorated to the point where friction between the joints causes swelling, tenderness and pain. Often nerve impingement also occurs.
