The Royal Society of Medicine has invited Dr. D. Hegarty to accept the nomination as a Fellow of the prestigious society.

Pain Relief Ireland is delighted to report that Dr. Dominic Hegarty (Clinical Director) has accepted the nomination to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been nominated for his contribution to the area of Pain Medicine. Uniquely he will be involved in assisting the development of pain medicine in this prestigious society for the years to come. Dr. Hegarty says “By being invited as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine opens fabulous opportunities to explore, education and network with leading pain physicians internationally. I am hoping to be able to contribute in a positive way to the challenge and objectives of the Society to develop pain medicine globally”. 

This is a challenge that Dr. Hegarty is looking forward to and is confident it will help strengthen his links with Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital (London), Kings College London with his own alma mata University College Cork. This will in turn ensure Pain Relief Ireland will have the best options available for its patients into the future.

A Prestigious Society

The Society was established in 1805 and was granted a Royal Charter by King William IV in 1834.  In 1905, under the leadership of Sir John MacAlister, the Society moved to 20 Hanover Square where the centenary was celebrated. Two years later the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London came together with seventeen specialist medical societies and, with a supplementary Royal Charter granted by Edward VII, became the Royal Society of Medicine.

In 1910 the Society acquired the site on the corner of Wimpole Street and Henrietta Place, which was opened by King George V and Queen Mary in May 1912 and where it remains to this day.

Royal Society of Medicine and  “Modern” Medicine

The Royal Society of Medicine is one of the country's major providers of accredited postgraduate medical education. Each year, the RSM organizes over 400 academic and public events, spanning 60 areas of special interest providing a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and debate. Videos of many key lectures are also available online, increasing access to the Society’s education programme. The RSM is home to one of the finest medical libraries in the world, with an extensive collection of books, journals, electronic journals and online medical databases. As well as providing medical education, the Society aims to promote an exchange of information and ideas on the science, practice and organization of medicine, both within the health professions and with responsible and informed public opinion.

Dr. Hegarty will contribute substantially to the Pain Medicine Section of the Society.
