Pain Relief Ireland recognizes that the one small step can be leap of faith if you are in pain. Just like Neil Armstrong and his crew, almost fifty years ago, took a huge step into the unknown every year we help men deal with chronic pain.
Dr. Dominic Hegarty says “Just as those on that mission knew there was a great challenge in front of them, they met it head on. They were in a vulnerable situation, but they relied on each other’s support and the back-up of (as Neil later said) hundreds of thousands of people behind the project”.
We take management pain in men very seriously. For this reason, we are delighted to support the excellent work of the Men’s Health’s Week 2018.
Unfortunately, it is recognized that the health of men in Ireland is poor, but it can be improved in many significant ways. Work has already been done to support the health needs of men and boys: Ireland was the first country in the world to have a National Men’s Health Policy which has now been succeeded by the Healthy Ireland - Men Action Plan; the ‘Engage’ Men’s Health Training Programme has influenced how services and structures support males; new innovative and pioneering initiatives have been developed by a range of organizations across the island which provide models for improving aspects of men’s health.
Much has been achieved, but there is room for more. The area of pain management is one such area!
In fact, Dr. Hegarty believes that pain management for men is one area that really fails to gain the recognition that it deserves. Every year at Pain Relief Ireland we successfully treat any many men who present with chronic pain. The greatest obstacle is the fear of discussing the issue. Once the options are presented to the men the fear disappears and we focus on resolving the chronic pain and regain control of the situation once again.
During Men's Health Week 2018, people in Ireland are also being asked to do something out of this world. Everyone is encouraged to work together to do at least one small practical thing to improve their own health and the health of men across the island. At Pain Relief Ireland we have chosen to highlight one particular chronic pain condition specifically effecting men and often is ignored, namely Chronic Groin & Testicular pain.
Chronic groin & testicular pain affects over 100,000 men annually. Quite often this chronic pain is the result of previous surgery or trauma such as a hernia repair, kidney removal, accident involving the scrotal region or pelvis, vasectomy or a number of infections. Majority of chronic testicular or groin pain is from unknown causes.
If you regularly experience testicular or groin pain, there is a solution that can allow you to enjoy a better quality of life without chronic pain. Why don’t you see what can be done to help this condition?
Finally, As MHW 2018 points out men’s health is not just an issue for individual men. While it is crucial for men to take responsibility for looking after themselves, their health can often be determined by other factors outside of their personal control. Thus, there is also a need for policy-makers, service providers, and society as a whole to recognize the role that they need to play, and to do something practical about it. This will require everyone to focus attention upon the men and boys around us.
If you have a chronic pain no matter where it is focused or how “minor” it may seem why don’t you get it checked out. Just like Neil Armstrong said “one small step......”
